Earthquake Tragedy in Haiti
On January 12th, 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti. The earthquake epicenter was located 10 miles southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince. Numerous significant aftershocks followed the initial quake. According to the U.N., the earthquake caused extensive infrastructure damage in Port-au-Prince, including Haitian government buildings, presidential palace, U.N. offices, hospitals, and relief organization offices. Residential dwellings and transportation networks also sustained significant damage.
It is estimated that some 3.5 million people have been affected by the quake.
Humanitarian organizations expect a considerable number of affected individuals to require emergency shelter assistance and other relief items. Access to affected populations remains limited at present due to extensive debris and damaged roadways.
The Haitian government estimates that more than 50,000 people were killed, with the number possibly closer to 100,000. There is not yet an official count of the dead.
Many of the capital's 3 million people are without access to food, water, shelter and electricity, and rescue crews are working "to save as many lives as possible."
Central Florida to Play Key Role in Haiti Relief Efforts
American Red Cross officials said more than 4,000 Haitian survivors could be coming to Central Florida soon.
The Red Cross plans to bring the Haitian survivors, as well as more than 45,000 U.S. nationals living in Haiti, to Jacksonville and then divide them among other Florida cities, including Tampa, Miami and Orlando.
Catholic Charities and other South Florida immigrant rights organizations also are planning an ambitious effort to airlift thousands of Haitian children left orphaned in the aftermath of this horrific earthquake.
Please keep in prayer the children, families, and communities left devastated by this disaster in Haiti. Pray also for God's protection and guidance upon those who are responding with emergency assistance.
Supporting our Neighbors
Although our reaction to the gut-wrenching situation in Haiti is immediate and real, and our prayers cannot be uttered quickly enough for those who are suffering, Discovery Church will be responding to this tragedy methodically and strategically with immediate emergency efforts left to those who are already in-country or have special rescue and disaster relief skills. We recognize that Haitians will need ongoing, long-term support and we want to ensure that our response is well thought out and delivered efficiently. We believe that Orlando will be playing a major role in assisting Haitian earthquake survivors for many weeks and months to come and it is our desire to prepare our resources to join our community in the endeavor.
At this time, we have decide to focus our efforts on supporting you, our church attendees as you meet the needs of those you know in our community.
